  •   The River Valley wrestling team continued their tradition of excellence at the section 4a individual tournament by placing five wrestlers in the top six and qualifying two wrestlers for the state meet.
Over the past 10 years, River Valley has qualified 24 wrestlers for the state tournament and 13 wrestlers have placed in the top six from their 16 man bracket.
Representing the Wildcats this year to the state tournament are section champions Jacob Anderson and Lance Briard.    Section Results Sam Baier, wrestling at 106, finished 4th at 2-2. Sam had a great tournament and showed some of his best wrestling of the year. He lost a heartbreaker (10-8) in overtime landing him in fourth place.
Gerritt Meidl took the 126 weight and finished at 2-2, good for fifth. He wrestled extremely well given that he came into the tournament unseeded and walked away with fifth place honors. Wrestling at 132 was Caleb Hammerschmidt. He was 2-2, however he was one win away from a medal round.
The first of the state representatives, Jacob Anderson was at the 138 pound class and finished at 3-0, gaining him first place honors and continued to show why he is ranked number four in the state at his weight. Anderson looked very sharp and has high expectations for the state tournament.
The 145 weight was handled by Alex Rodriguez. He finished one win away from a medal round at 1-2.
Tim Krueger stepped onto the mat at the 160 weight and lost two close matches, one in overtime to the section runner-up and one match by a 0-2 score to get into the medal round.
Jordan Meine continued to keep his spot at 195 and finished 3-1, good for third.  Meine had a great tournament. After losing a close match in the semi-finals he battled back with two straight win to capture the third place honors.
The second wrestler headed to state is heavyweight, Lance Briard. Briard finished at 2-0 and landed himself in first place. Briard looked very good, pinning both of his opponents to capture his first trip to the state tournament. He brought the crowd to their feet with a second period pin over his state ranked (3rd) opponent in the finals match.
The state tournament will take place at the Xcel Energy Center on Thursday (team wrestling), Friday and Saturday (individual wrestling).
