The Brown County Sheriff’s Office is closing Clear Lake located in Brown County to all vehicle traffic including cars, trucks, SUV’s, snowmobiles and ATV’s effective Monday, February 27, 2012.
We are experiencing increasingly unpredictable lake ice conditions due to unseasonably warm weather this winter. The ice has highly variable changes in ice thickness over a relatively short distance on Clear Lake and is not considered safe for vehicles. Recreational vehicles such as snowmobiles and ATV’s will also not be allowed on Clear Lake. People walking or fishing, on Clear Lake should use extreme caution due to thin ice. Caution should be used on all area lakes in Brown County due to the effect the weather has had on the ice.
Minnesota State Statute 86B.106 gives the County Sheriff the authority to prohibit the use of motorized vehicles on all or portions of the county’s lakes. Deputies may issue a citation to violators under subsection (b) as they deem necessary. All larger fish houses with wheels that need a motor vehicle to pull them from the ice should be removed immediately.
