  • The New Ulm girls hockey team has been named South Central Conference champions, defeating Waseca and losing to Faribault.

    New Ulm 3, Waseca 2
    The New Ulm Eagles girls hockey team clinched the South Central Conference championship by defeating the Waseca Blue Jays 3-2 in an away game last Thursday, Jan. 26. Brook Schugel scored first for the Eagles with an assist by Sleepy Eye’s Erika Ries. Schugel retuned the favor by assisting on Ries’ goal seven minutes later to give New Ulm a 2-0 lead in the first period. Waseca scored the only goal in the second period. Sleepy Eye’s Lexi Weiss scored the game winner about seven minutes into the third period, assisted by Brittany Denn. Waseca scored a few minutes later to end the scoring, giving the Eagles the win, 3-2. Bailey Landreville got the win in goal for New Ulm stopping 23 out of 25 shots on goal. The Eagles are 5-0 in conference play and 10-11-1 overall.
    New Ulm 3, Faribault 4
    The Eagles dropped a close non-conference game Tuesday, Jan. 24 to the Faribault Falcons 3-4. Sam Guggisberg scored first for New Ulm with an assist from Sleepy Eye’s Erika Ries. Faribault evened the score at 15:47 in the period. The Falcons scored the only goal in the second period to take a 2-1 lead and opened the third period with a goal to extend the lead to 3-1. The Eagles stormed back scoring two goals, the first by Sleepy Eye’s Lexi Weiss and the second by Brittany Denn to notch the score 3-3. Faribault’s Cady Walker scored the winning goal at 14:31, her second of the game. Julia Schaefer took the loss in the nets for the Eagles, stopping 26 of 30 shots.
