  • St. Mary’s boys take two, defeating Truman, GFW

  • St. Mary’s 86, Truman 32 I got to the game a little late last Thursday night and when I entered the gym, the game was over. Oh, there was still plenty of time left; about seven minutes of the first half had been played, but St. Mary’s had a 19-2 lead over the Truman Blue Jays. The Knigh...

  • The second half was even worse for Truman. The half started with the Knights holding a 47-17 lead and the Blue Jays scored only 15 more points. St. Mary’s, on the other hand, continued to score at will. Coach Tim Milliard must have said something to the team at half time because they played a much more disciplined game, using their height advantage inside and being much more patient with the ball. Still, the Knights poured in a few three-pointers, so they didn’t completely abandon the perimeter. Sean Mathiowetz had seven steals in the game, three in a row at one point, leading to easy lay-up opportunities. He was able to make only one of them however and the look of amazement on his face when he missed his first easy bucket was, as they say, priceless. In a close game it would have been painful, but in this rout it was kind of funny. Late in the second half Milliard substituted heavily and a number of players got some game experience. Kansas Adams led all scorers with 24 points. The final score was 86-32.

    St. Mary’s 84, GFW 51
St. Mary’s played an away game Friday night, defeating GFW 84-51. The first half was very competitive and closed with the Knights holding a 42-33 lead. In the second half, St. Mary’s stepped up its defensive effort and GFW managed only 18 points, while the Knights equaled their first half, scoring 42 more points. “Even though we scored 42 points in the first half I thought we were a little out of sync,” said Milliard. “We played some of the best basketball of the year in the second half. It was good to see all five starters in double figures.”
