Despite a worrysome and slow start, the Sleepy Eye girls basketball team brought home a win last Tuesday night, defeating Lincoln High by a score of 75-45 on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University.
“We got off to a slow start and in some early foul trouble so we were not able to extend our lead past ten points.” Head coach Ryan Hulke commented.
Going into the locker room at half time, Sleepy Eye’s lead was just six points with the score 31-25. “We didn’t have to make a lot of half time adjustments; we just needed to go out and play our basketball. The girls know we are not great in a half court setting. We need to make it a full court game, and in the second half we got some steals and ran away with the game early. We got good pressure from Sydney [Remus], and Jessica [Busch] and that was the spark we needed” Hulke commented.
The girls proceeded to come out and outscored Lincoln High in the second half, 39-20.
“It’s now time to take it up a notch. We start with a bunch of conference games after the new year, and it will be stressed in practice that we step up our games, no more time for excuses and mistakes. Every coach I have had stressed after Christmas time, it’s a new season and we need to treat it that same way. We need to start playing smarter.” Hulke concluded.
